What is up everyone and welcome back to Mental Sweat Monday, I’m Hannah Huesman!
I love talking about mental skills like we do physical skills. They both take time to learn, we have to practice both, and a lot of the time we fail before we succeed.
When it comes to nerves, we know that they can pop up out of nowhere. One day we’re cool, calm and collected. The next day we’re nervous all over again.
We need to understand that by having nerves, it means two things.
- You care
- You’re awake
You don’t get nervous when you’re sitting on the couch, watching TV, taking a nap, or when you’re doing something you don’t care about. You get nervous when you’re about to do something awesome.
So, it hit me, what if we viewed nerves as our brain warming up? Your body has to warm up for performance, right? So does your brain! If your mind isn’t ready for competition, it can get in the way of you performing.
The next time you start getting nervous, instead of interpreting it as being scared or unprepared, start viewing it as your mind running around, getting loose and stretching for your performance.
Your mind is telling your body that it too, is ready to perform.
