As a young girl growing up in Minsk, Victoria “Vika” Azarenka, who was a frequent tagalong with her mother to the local tennis club where she worked, had energy to spare. One day, in an effort to keep her daughter busy, Victoria’s mother handed the then 7-year-old Vika a racquet and ball and told her to hit the ball up against a wall. Soon after, Victoria had her first “real” on-court lesson as she quickly fell in love with the sport and an obsession was born.
At just 15, Victoria moved from Belarus to Scottsdale, Arizona, in order to pursue her career. She felt that conditions there allowed her to train more often, plus the competition was more fierce, and she soon began her career as a competitive junior player, never looking back.
Victoria won her first junior title at the 2005 Junior Australian Open tennis tournament, and in 2006 reached the WTA™ top 100 for the first time, debuting at #99. Her sacrifices, hard work and passion had begun to pay off.
Her first WTA™ tournament win came at the start of the 2009 season, where she captured the Brisbane International tennis tournament title, soon followed by another tournament victory in Memphis.
Those early victories helped to fuel her motivation and competitive edge. She also continued winning as she steadily climbed the world rankings.
Victoria kicked off the 2012 season with a bang. She captured her first major title at the Australian Open tennis tournament and the now 22-year-old champion vaulted into the #1 WTA™ World Ranking in the process. As the first player to ever catapult into the #1 ranking without ever having been at #2, her record-breaking ascension also gave her the prestigious honor of being the first Belarusian to ever hold the top spot!
Victoria’s come a long way since that first experience picking up the racquet at a tennis club in Minsk as she’s established herself as the premier player on the WTA™ Tour. With her natural ability, unrelenting dedication and purely dominant talent, Vika is one superstar that has the ability to stay on top for years to come.
